Project: Goldbar Wastewater Treatment Plant Power Assessment

Description: Completed an on-site assessment of energy management opportunities for the City of Edmonton, Goldbar Wastewater Treatment Plant. Assessed existing energy management opportunities at Goldbar’s main plant and established key power quality and energy utilization baselines.

 

Project: Ardrossan Sewage Lagoon Decommissioning

Description: Decommissioning and reclamation options for the Ardrossan Sewage Lagoon Facility. Implemented plan to stabilizing anaerobic ponds. The remaining landscape was allowed to recover naturally, permitting vegetation to grow and serve as a nesting habitat for wetland birds.

 

Project: Integrated Waste Management System Review

Description: Developed an integrated waste management strategy for Strathcona County in 1999 including public consultation program, development and analysis of options, full cost accounting, benchmarking with other community’s, and a public survey.  

 

Project: Procedures Manual

Description: Developed procedures manual for waste plant. Procedures cover all plant functions, and include a startup procedure, wash process procedure, filter cleaning procedure, dryer operating procedure, extractor process procedure, etc. Also upgraded wastewater treatment system using DAF (dissolved air flotation).  

 

Project: Telus Waste Sort

Description: Performed a waste sort for three Telus buildings located in Edmonton. Obtained data regarding waste management practices and established a benchmark.  Determined the composition and waste generation rates of the waste stream, recyclable stream, bathroom and kitchen waste, assisted in determining the success of various waste minimization programs, assisted TELUS in determining the disposal of recyclables and economic savings due to waste minimization.  

 

Project: Landfill Investigations and Reclamation Planning

Description: Conducted soil and water testing to determine whether leachate was leaking at a landfill in Strathcona County.  A Landfill Reclamation plan was devised, taking into account current and past regulations governing landfill operations and closure.

Description: Conducted an evaluation and tender review for the five-year waste management contract.  KC will be developing an integrated waste management strategy for the County in 1999 including a public survey and partial waste sort.

Description: Tested road sweepings to determine if method of disposal met current criteria for materials usage.

Project: Alberta Review of Environmental Services for the Construction and Demolition Industry

Description: Conducted a review of environmental services available to reduce construction and demolition waste in Alberta.  The information was collected as part of a multi-media educational package for resource management in the Construction, Reconstruction and Demolition Industry.

Description: Researched and provided updated facts and questions for the integration of tire recycling information game aimed at elementary students.  

 

Project: Waste Management Services Programs Review  
Client: City of Leduc
Year: 1997
Description: Conducted a review of all current waste management services programs including recycling, composting and curbside collection. Recommendations were provided to move the City towards a cost-effective and integrated waste minimization plan to significantly reduce the waste stream going to landfill.  This project had an extensive public communication component that included focus groups, surveys, and personal contact.

 

Project: Environment Canada Waste Audits

Description: Locations in Edmonton, Yellowknife and Calgary were evaluated to determine if Environment Canada’s target of reducing waste going to landfill by 80% was being achieved at each of the locations.  Waste and recyclables were physically sorted and the results were analyzed to give Environment Canada innovative and workable solutions to further reduce waste going to landfill.

Description: Conducted an analysis of the effectiveness of the "No Waste" recycling program.  This included a physical audit of waste and recyclables, interpretation of results, and recommendations for improvements for future improvements.

 

Project: Feasibility Study for the Re-use of On-site Wood Ash and Bottom Sand Material as an Aggregate Road Base Material  
Client: Eagle River Power Generating Station  
Year: 1995
Description: Conducted a feasibility study of the potential environmental impacts of re-using wood ash and bottom sand material produced at the Eagle River Power Generating Station in Whitecourt, Alberta as on-site road base for an aggregate type road.  Initial findings showed a good potential for the re-use of wood ash and bottom sand.  Approval was granted by Alberta Environmental Protection to implement this re-use option at the generation station.  

 

Project: New House Food Market

Description: Changed refrigeration condensing units from water cooled to remote air cooled condensers thereby generating cost savings from reduced water use.  Payback period of less than two years was estimated.

 

Project: Public Consultation Plan and Technical Advice: Economic Instruments for Municipal Solid Waste Reduction Project

Description: Developed a conceptual plan for the Economic Instruments for Municipal Waste Reduction Task Force including time line; public consultation; information packages; outline for a discussion paper; a Task Force Manual, and a presentation to the Task Force.

 

Project: Draft Recommendations and Draft Report Outline: "Our Forgotten Resource: The Common Sense Approach"

Description: Developed draft recommendations and a draft report outline for the Task Force on Economic Instruments and Waste Reduction instituted by the Environmental Council of Alberta. The project included an evaluation of the Task Force and comments concerning results from the public involvement strategy.

 

Project: Bow Valley Integrated Waste Management Study

Description: Conducted portions of the Bow Valley Integrated Waste Management Study on a sub-consulting basis, that included a review of suitable waste minimization technologies such as recycling, composting, and industrial waste audits.  Input was also provided on the transportation, landfill, and public consultation portions of the project. The Bow Valley includes Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise, Kananaskis Country, Morley, and the Stoney Indian Reserve.  

 

Project: A Financial Model - Used Oil Collection by Bottle Depots

Description: Developed a financial model for the Alberta Used Oil Association and the Alberta Bottle Depot Association on which to develop an economically feasible system to finance the collection of used motor oil, oil filters, and used oil containers from the public. This project included an evaluation and recommendations for the current project collection locations.

Description: On-going research to determine compostability of this material using the Cleanit Greenit mini laboratory.  

 

Project: Composting Hydrocarbon Contaminated Tank Bottom Sludge at the Cleanit Greenit Site

Description: The two objectives of this project were to cost-effectively divert tank bottom sludge from current disposal practices and to manufacture this material into an organic fertilizer. Laboratory mini-trials were conducted to determine  the compostability of oily sludge.

Description: KC Environmental is designing an innovative new wood-ash pavement stabilization medium for use at the Cleanit Greenit compost site.

 

Project: Western Canada Auditing Roundtable (WCAR)

Description: WCAR is an auditing process that involves a checklist of a variety of policies, including insurance, emergency procedures, etc.  KC Environmental is carrying out this process for the Cleanit Greenit compost site.

 

Project: Cleanit Greenit Compost Systems

Description: To date (June 2000), thirty-eight commercial/industrial companies have signed on to deposit their organic waste at the Cleanit Greenit Compost Site I. As well, several new customers are a part of the Cleanit Greenit Cart Program. Since initiation of the site, a more diverse array of clients are on board, supplying feedstocks such as landscaping waste, manure, eggs, kitchen grease, sewage sludge, carwash sand and food waste.

Description: Cleanit Greenit Composting Systems has developed two compost products for the bulk market. The two products are: Compost Soil Amendment and Compost Based Garden Mix. Both contain compost produced at the Cleanit Greenit site and are marketed under the new Organic Soil logo.

Project: Weyerhaeuser (Grand Prairie) Compost Pilot

Description: Composted 21 dry tonnes of pulp sludge, wood waste, ash for Weyerhaeuser Canada. Collected and documented periodic temperature and odour data to determine low cost compost options.

 

Project: Cleanit Greenit Cart System

Description: Initiated innovative cart system in which carts are delivered to various clients, filled with organic waste generated by the client, picked up on regular route by KC employee, brought to the Cleanit Greenit site, emptied, washed and returned to the client. Clients include  restaurants, hospitals, a seed testing laboratory, breweries, hotels, etc.

 

Project: Composting Facility Operating Practices Course

Description: Member of consortium adding the Canadian components to a 4-5 day training program in the operation of large-scale composting facilities. Also involved in program delivery.

 

Project: Ardrossan Composting Operation and Landfill Reclamation Plan
Client: Strathcona County

Description: Examination of a landfill with seepage and leachate problems. Recommendations developed and divided into immediate and long-term actions, which include the proposed use of the site after reclamation as a combined waste management facility and recreation site.  Developed a composting site and operation plan at the landfill.

 

Project: Cleanit Greenit Composting Systems

Description: Developed full-scale composting facility for various industrial waste streams. Site capacity is approximately 15000 tonnes/year. The system features a compost mini laboratory developed in conjunction with the University of Alberta to establish strict quality control parameters on the various compost feedstocks.

 

Project: Composting of Biosolids

Year: 1998
Description: Co-composted Town of Devon’s sewage sludge at 6% solids content at KC’s Cleanit Greenit Composting Systems site. This was in response to the Town’s interest in pursuing economical and environmentally sustainable alternatives for the disposal of its municipal sewage sludge.  Carbon feed stocks are blended with the sewage.

 

Project: Composting Operational Plan integrating with the Landfill Reclamation Plan

Description: Conducted a historical profile of the organic piles and developed a compost management plan to ensure organic materials and the site were used in a manner consistent with long term management and current regulatory requirements.

 

Project: Composting of Ash, Pulp Feedstock, and Wood Waste

Description: In partnership with Eagle River Power, Millar Western, and the Alberta Research Council, a compost pilot project was designed and constructed to determine the fertilizer capability of the compost made from industrial waste materials.  The goal of this project is to establish a co-composting facility in northern Alberta.

 

Project: Compostability Testing

Description: The Cleanit Greenit Compost laboratory was used to run compost trials for Amoco drilling waste.  The waste was mixed with varying amounts of amendments.  The mixtures were monitored to determine optimum moisture content and amendment ratios to achieve composting conditions and to remediate contamination.  Recommendations for further remediation activities were formulated.

 

Project: Maturity Testing Analysis

Description: This is a continuation of the 1996 BIOX Sludge Composting Pilot Project.  Testing of the compost included temperature readings, compost maturity testing, trace element analysis, available nutrient analysis, and moisture content analysis.  Recommendations were made for future compost operations.

 

Project: Alternative Uses for Wood Fly Ash

Description: Supervised project to determine viable alternative uses for Eagle River Power’s wood ash.  Subsequently, KC helped to design a compost system that will market a value-added product from the ash to generate revenue.

 

Project: Edmonton Co-Composting Facility

Year: 1997
Description: Provided biological and technical support to the GKO Engineering process engineering team in the design of the compost facility.  Technical reports were written to provide answers, alternatives and options for specific processes within the facility.

 

Project: BIOX Sludge Composter Technical Project Management

Year: 1996
Description: Provided technical project management of the industrial sludge composting pilot project at Dow Chemical in Fort Saskatchewan.  This involved on-site process element design, bulking agent analysis and procurement, materials handling, logistics coordination, cost analysis, contractor liaison, sampling program design, trouble-shooting and permitting considerations.

Description: Conducted a feasibility study for the composting of 2 million US gallons of BIOX sludge at the Dow Chemical plant in Fort Saskatchewan.  This comprehensive project included evaluation of sludge dewatering technologies, up-to-date research, evaluation of suitable compost technologies, odour considerations, and the design of the site layout and operations for a windrow composting operation.

Description: Provided technical composting and practical business expertise to an expert team to develop an initial composting pilot program.  The project included development of an operational plan, budget, and other logistical considerations.

 

Project: Municipal Composter Design

Description: Designed a feasible composting option for the Town of Morinville.  A cost-effective composting business plan was developed that utilized local resources.

 

Project: St. Albert Yard Waste Pilot Project

Description: Provided pilot design, project management and technical expertise to further develop the Campbell Park Yard Waste Drop-off Site into a small-scale windrow composting pilot and to refine the yard waste collection concept. KC provided on-site and off-site technical supervision for the development of the composting aspect and on the collection issues.

 

Project: St. Albert Yard Waste Pilot Project - Final Report

Description: Developed a report containing the summary and results of the 1995 Yard Waste Pilot Project.  The project was a success:  yard waste and other compostable materials collected at the curbside using 95 gallon bins were successfully composted using the windrow method and held at pasteurization temperatures for fifteen consecutive days.

 

Project: Evaluation "Pay As You Throw Pilot"

Description: Conducted a technical and cost evaluation of various user fee based waste disposal systems combined with a composting disposal option.  Recommendations were provided regarding a future "Pay as you Throw" and composting pilot.

Description: Evaluated technical proposals concerning co-composting of sewage sludge amd municipal solid waste as an alternatice to sludge irradiation.  Areview of co-composting technologies in the United States, Canada and Europe was also conducted.

Description: Coordinated the overall project and assisted in the design of the biweekly waste and recycling collection public communication program and survey.  The project was undertaken to determine public opinion and feasability concerns regarding biweekly collection.  Also, a technical review of the issue and recommendations to the City of Edmonton were provided.

Description: Conducted initial environmental review to identify opportunities for EMS development, developed environmental policy, developed various planning and implementation procedures, followed up with checking and corrective action as well as management review. Conducted training and an internal audit. Company subsequently received ISO 14000 certification.

Description: Developed and implemented an Environmental Audit Process that provides a systematic, documented, periodic and objective review of the municipality’s operations, practices and policies regarding environmental conditions.  This process included the preparation of a process model and departmental audits. The project will provide the County with improved environmental planning and will result in improved environmental performance.
